Our 2016 Program

A note from GWI Founder, Seema Hingorani

Our inaugural GWI four-week Summer Intensive Program on Penn’s campus ended on June 24, 2016. Our 30 diverse freshman and sophomores from colleges all across the country learned a lot in the classroom from highly regarded business school professors from Wharton, Columbia Business School and the Yale School of Management, among others. In addition, an incredible lineup of senior women and men in the asset management business spoke to our students throughout the program about their career and life experiences. See the full list of Scholar backgrounds and our professors and speakers. We also took our Scholars to visit a select number of asset management organizations including Bloomberg, DE Shaw, PNC Bank and Wellington Management and ringing the closing bell at the NYSE on June 10th was clearly a memorable highlight!

The curriculum was rigorous and engaging with topics ranging from financial statement analysis and basic accounting to learning how to value a business and construct a portfolio as a public pension fund or university endowment to learning about impact investing and socially responsible investing. There was a full day of presentation skills training and panel discussions about career development and interview preparation. On the final day of the program, each group of Scholars (5 teams) did awesome jobs on their Comcast Corporation stock research reports and PowerPoint presentations. We were all very impressed (especially our Investment Committee members that included myself; Anna Dopkin from T. Rowe Price; GWI's advisory board chair and former CEO of Commonfund Capital, Sue Carter, and Wharton finance professor, Bilge Yilmaz) with each team's investment recommendation to buy or sell shares of Comcast's stock based on in-depth research, including a meeting with senior management of Comcast Corporation sponsored by T. Rowe Price portfolio managers. It was clear that a lot of what we taught our Scholars really stuck! That day we also presented each Scholar with an official certificate of program completion which made for a fun ceremony. We were so proud of our inaugural cohort!

Following our four-week educational program on Penn's campus, our Scholars went on to have spectacular six-week paid summer internship experiences that GWI secured for them at leading asset management firms around the world including Vista Equity Partners, Causeway Capital, Carlson Capital, The Blackstone Group, The Carlyle Group, Oaktree Capital, Taconic Capital, Perry Capital, Wellington Management, Walter Scott Partners Limited, CPPIB, Bowdoin College Investment Office and MassPRIM. See the full list of internship firm partners here. Our students were in close contact throughout their internships with GWI staff and, importantly, with our GWI Ambassadors, women and men in the asset management business who served as local, on-the-ground resources and friends for our Scholars in the regions where they interned. These Ambassadors were there to help with any questions and to offer advice. Many of them took our students out for lunches and dinners to get to know them and make them feel at home, which was wonderful. See the full list of our GWI Ambassadors here. The relationships and friendships that our Scholars formed with so many amazing people during their ten weeks this summer will be invaluable to them for the rest of their lives.
