Girls Who Invest Expands Reach of Summer Intensive Program, Partners with Coursera and CFA Institute to Further Bolster Pipeline of Women Asset Managers

In its Second Year, Girls Who Invest Accelerates Toward Goal to See 30 Percent of the World’s Investable Capital Managed by Women by 2030

NEW YORK (May 25, 2017) —Girls Who Invest, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the number of women in portfolio management and executive leadership in the asset management industry, will kick-off its second annual Summer Intensive Program on June 1, 2017 —expanding last year’s core program from 30 to 60, reaching 363 young women overall through new partnerships with Coursera, one of the world’s largest online platforms for higher education, and CFA Institute, the global association of investment professionals that sets the standard for professional excellence.

Sixty scholars will embark on the rigorous Girls Who Invest 10-week Summer Intensive Program, which prepares college-aged women to enter the industry on investment teams across all asset classes and become skilled allocators of capital. The diverse 2017 class hails from seven countries, 18 states, and 33 colleges. For the first four weeks, these promising college freshman and sophomores will gather at the University of Pennsylvania to learn about core finance and investment concepts and skills from some of the most respected business school professors and industry all-stars.

Scholars will then build upon skills learned during the educational portion of the program by immediately embarking on six-week paid internships with leading asset management firms around the globe. During each scholar’s internship, experienced investment industry professionals will serve as local, on-the-ground resources and mentors.

To educate and empower more young women to pursue careers in asset management, this year Girls Who Invest admitted an additional 303 talented college-aged women to pilot the Girls Who Invest Online Learners Program. Through partnerships with Coursera and CFA Institute, Girls Who Invest will provide hundreds of additional qualified young women with access to valuable resources needed to secure positions in asset management—including a selection of the world’s best online courses in finance, management and leadership. Online learners will also benefit from Girls Who Invest’s robust, ongoing community.

“With support from partners like Coursera and CFA Institute, we can together scale the program to arm even more young women with world-class educational resources, empowering our scholars to enter the asset management industry with cutting-edge skills,” said Kathleen Powers Dunlap, CEO of Girls Who Invest. “We’re committed to pursuing a trajectory of rapid growth to transform the asset management industry, set the next generation of women investors up for success, and build a demand for gender diversity in the management of capital.”

One skill key to success in asset management is financial modeling. Girls Who Invest will provide its scholars and online learners alike with access to Wharton’s Business and Financial Modeling specialization—a sequence of multiple courses on Coursera powered by top instructors, concluding in a Capstone project. Graduates will receive a joint certificate from Wharton and Coursera after completing the online program. Girls Who Invest also allows participants to select from an additional 17 courses available through Coursera to accelerate their careers.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Girls Who Invest as they create a pipeline of talented young women to enter the field of asset management,” said Rebecca Taber, Head of Government Partnerships, Coursera. “From financial modeling to business development courses, our curated online program will empower young women with the knowledge and experience needed to build fulfilling careers in investment management.”

Through the CFA Institute Investment Foundationstm Program, Girls Who Invest will give online learners access to a comprehensive global education certificate program. The Investment Foundations course of study conveys investment industry essentials to help young women gain a more complete understanding of the financial landscape. The certificate program will provide young women with a recognized credential to enhance their candidacy as job applicants.

“CFA Institute supports Girls Who Invest’s mission to empower the next generation of young women to build careers in the stewardship of capital,” said Rahul Keshap, Head, Investment Foundations Program at CFA Institute. “We are thrilled to provide scholars with access to this certificate program. Building the pipeline of women who choose investing as a career is an important part of our Women in Investment Management initiative.”

Girls Who Invest aims to see 30 percent of the world's investable capital managed by women by 2030 and plans to continue to grow its program to reach as many talented young women as possible. Visit Girls Who Invest’s website for more information on how you can join the cause:
